Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.290 and 22622.290 (Beta Channel)

Good Evening friends! Starting today, Microsoft will be releasing two preview builds of Windows 11 version 22H2 to members of the Windows Insider Program on the Beta channel. Note that this approach was already used in 2019 during testing of Windows 10 version 19H2

  • The first group of users will receive builds 22622.xxx, in which new features will be activated with a small service package. Functional updates for Windows 10 are released in the same way.
  • The second group will receive assemblies 22621.xxxin which new features will be disabled by default.

This approach will allow Microsoft to test the possibility of releasing updates with features disabled by default. By comparing feedback and telemetry between the two insider groups, engineers can determine if a particular feature is causing stability issues. Based on this data, the company will decide whether to enable the feature for more Insiders, or whether to disable it to address issues.

Most insiders on the Beta channel will automatically receive an update to Build 22622.xxx. However, it is important to note that not all new features will be activated immediately after the update is installed, as Microsoft will still conduct A / B testing before the innovation becomes available to more Insiders.

The company understands that insiders on the Beta channel want to choose which update they will use. If you are in a group with features disabled by default (build 22621.xxx), then check for updates and agree to install an optional update that will make these features available (build 22622.xxx).

It is noted that after installing the service pack, some previous new features may disappear. If this happens, then just be patient, and soon the functions will return to you. Microsoft is working on improving this testing scheme.

It’s worth adding that this approach only applies to insiders on the Beta channel and does not indicate a change in plans for the final release of the update. The Service Pack artificially increases the build number to make it easier for Microsoft engineers to distinguish between devices with features enabled and disabled by default. Not all features that are being tested on the Beta channel will be released to consumers.

Full build numbers:

  • 10.0.22622.290.ni_release_svc_prod2.220614-1019.
  • 10.0.22621.290.ni_release_svc_prod2.220614-1019.

Attention! Recently, builds under the Windows Insider program have become unavailable to users from Russia and the Republic of Belarus, probably due to geo-blocking. Windows Update simply doesn’t find new updates, whether it’s a build in the Dev channel or a cumulative update in the Beta or Release Preview channel. If you are affected by this problem, then enable the VPN by selecting any European country, check for updates in Windows Update, wait for the download to begin, and disable the VPN. You can read more about this situation in our article.

Innovations in assembly 22622.290

Suggested actions

With this build, WIndows Insiders can try out a new feature that lets you complete everyday tasks in Windows 11 faster with suggested actions. When you copy a date, time, or phone number, Windows will prompt you for actions such as creating an event on your calendar or making a phone call using one of the applications.

  • When you copy a phone number, Windows will display a simple, easy-to-close interface that will suggest ways to call that phone using Teams or other installed apps.
  • When copying the date and/or time, Windows will display a simple, easy-to-close interface that prompts you to create a calendar event using supported applications. After selecting the preferred application, the application will be launched with the appropriate page to create an event with the date and time fields automatically filled in.

OneDrive storage alerts and subscription management in Settings

In March, Microsoft expanded the ability to manage your Microsoft 365 subscription through the Settings app in Windows 11, including the ability to view your subscription payment method under Accounts.

Starting with this build, the Accounts page will also display information about a 100GB OneDrive offline subscription. This will allow you to track recurring payments, payment method, and the amount of OneDrive space used in Windows 11. If you approach or exceed your OneDrive cloud storage limit, you will also be able to see relevant information on this page.

Note. This change is currently not available to all Insiders. The fact is that Microsoft wants to collect feedback from a small group of users before the change becomes available to all Insiders.

Fixes in build 22622.290

  • Conductor:
    • Middle-clicking on a folder inside File Explorer will open it in a new tab.
    • The tabbed interface should now be included in the keyboard focus loop when you press the Tab or F6 keys. When the focus is on the tab bar, you can use the right or left arrow keys to navigate through them.
    • Made some changes to the “Display full path in title bar” setting so that the folder name is always visible.
    • We fixed a scaling issue that could cause tabs to be unexpectedly large.
    • If you right-click on a tab and then click anywhere else in File Explorer, the context menu should now close.

Fixes in both builds

  • Added FSCTL_LMR_QUERY_INFO code for Server Message Block (SMB) Redirector (RDR) for Public File System Control (FSCTL).
  • Added support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 in Windows Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) client and server implementations.
  • Team updated Remove-Item for correct interaction with Microsoft OneDrive folders.
  • Group Policy activated InternetExplorerModeEnableSavePageAs. Details about the policy can be found See documentation for Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue that caused the “Take Photo” button to disappear when selecting the “Camera” app in the dialog box for attaching an image.
  • We fixed an issue where devices were not prompted by Windows Update to extend the functionality of the base driver package if the extension was installed separately from the base driver.
  • We fixed an issue that caused the installation from media (IFM) for Active Directory to fail with the “2101 JET_errCallbackFailed” error.
  • We fixed an issue that occurred when the Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service (LDS) reset the password for userProxy objects. The password reset ended with an error, for example, “00000005: SvcErr: DSID-03380C23, problem 5003 (WILL_NOT_PERFORM), data 0”.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge not being available in Windows Sandbox.

Known Issues

  • General:

Engineers are working on a fix for an issue that could cause a small number of Insiders on the Beta channel to experience cyclical crashes in Windows UI components (such as explorer.exe), which may cause the screen to appear to flicker. If you encounter this problem, then run PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command:

Add-AppxPackage -Register -Path C:WindowsSystemAppsMicrosoft.UI.Xaml.CBS_8wekyb3d8bbweAppxManifest.xml -DisableDevelopmentMode -ForceApplicationShutdow

  • Windows Explorer:

File Explorer tabs incorrectly display up arrow button next to the address bar. This will be fixed in future builds.

I wish you a successful update!
