Apple Inc. announced the first update to its AirPods Pro since the flagship product first went on sale in October 2019, adding improved sound quality and a redesigned case.
The new model, which retains the $249 price of the previous generation, offers crisper sound and an H2 wireless chip, Apple said during Wednesday’s presentation. The new headphones also feature an updated carrying case with holes for speakers that can emit noise to help customers locate the device.
AirPods are becoming an increasingly important part of Apple’s Wearables, Home and Accessories category, which brought in about $8 billion in revenue last quarter. The Pro models offer active noise cancellation, giving consumers a reason to pay more for the higher-end version. The other models cost $129 and $179, with the over-the-ear version – the AirPods Max – costing $549.
The first AirPods were launched in 2016 as part of an expansion into audio accessories that also included the HomePod mini speaker. The company is also working on a more advanced, larger home speaker that will launch next year, Bloomberg News reported.
