Basics of SEO

If you have heard the terms SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) before, you may have spent a lot of time online. Although you may have heard or read these words, you may not realize how important they are in the online world. The purpose of search engine optimization is to get the best website ranking in search engines (like Google, Yahoo !, Bing, and others), to get the highest visibility. The “best rating” can be at the top of the page, or the highest result, because those results are the most visible and are often clicked.

If you read these words, you are – no doubt an Internet user. As an Internet user, you may be familiar with the search engines to find information about topics that interest you or that you wish to learn more about. When you search for replacement windows, for example, you are probably typing in those words, “replacement windows.” The results page will load hundreds of thousands (or millions) of articles and websites that contain the words you are looking for.

Obviously, you will not read beyond the first page or two results – that is very consuming and a little ridiculous. However, you will check the results uploaded on the first page, from top to bottom. It’s just the way our natural learning style works: from top to bottom, left to right. So how does Google, Yahoo, or Bing know which results should be displayed in those few top links?

Vendors that sell switch windows (whatever you want) want to be placed at the top of these results pages so you can have the opportunity to browse their company page and become a customer. It is useless for a company to be buried on page 149 of search results, because no potential customer will ever find them there. Search engine users feel the same way. If they are looking for information about a particular product, the first results they want to see should be relevant, informative and helpful – not a vague word-for-word article we put in the search box.

In short, that is what SEO does. Build a website to get the most attention from a search engine. How this is done by inserting key words and phrases into the search engine and the search engine, called Keywords, body text or headings. Use of these keywords – frequency, position, etc. – is important and can make a difference in the ranking of search engines.

Determining keywords can be difficult. It’s all about knowing what Internet searchers will type in a search box. Some may type in “changing windows,” while others may search for “new windows” or “energy-saving glass.” Using all of these keywords and phrases on a website can bring you to the top of the results page, generate traffic and generate more customers – and that is a true measure of SEO value.
