According to the company, technological advancements in the healthcare industry have given cybercriminals more opportunities to attack the industry
The number of cyber attacks on India’s healthcare industry was the second highest globally, with the country witnessing 7.7% of the total occurrences in the segment in 2021, cyber security firm CloudSEK said on Tuesday.
According to CloudSEK’s report on “Increased Cyber Attacks on the Global Healthcare Sector,” the US healthcare industry faced 28% of total global attacks.
“India saw the second highest number of attacks with a total of 7.7% of the total number of attacks on the healthcare industry in 2021,” the report said.
The 7.7% incidence of cyber attacks on the Indian healthcare industry translates into more than 71 million records, according to the report.
CloudSEK is among the entities that provide cyber threat intelligence to India’s cyber security watchdog CERT-In.
According to the company, technological advancements in the healthcare industry such as remote health monitoring, electronic health records and the Internet of Things (IoT) have provided cybercriminals with more opportunities to attack the industry.
Data collected by CloudSEK shows that 1.87,000 million records have already been recorded in the first four months of 2022.
The dynamic of the attack seems to have changed globally in 2022. Australia was the worst-hit country with around 70 million records, followed by Thailand, which faced more than 10 million records in the first four months of 2022, according to the report.
