Elon Musk says he is buying Manchester United

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, said on Twitter on Tuesday that he is buying Manchester United Plc soccer club, without giving any details.

Mr Musk has a history of unconventional behavior and irreverent tweets and it was not immediately clear whether he planned to pursue a deal that would secure Manchester United.

“I’m buying Manchester United, welcome,” Mr Musk said in a tweet. The team is controlled by the American Glazer family. Neither the family nor Mr. Musk immediately responded to a request for comment.

British newspaper The Daily Mirror reported last year that the Glazers were prepared to sell the club, but only if they were offered more than £4 billion.

Mr Musk is currently trying to pull off a $44 billion deal to buy the social media company, which has landed him in court.

Manchester United is one of the best supported football clubs in the world. They became champions of England a record 20 times and won the European Cup three times, the most prestigious club competition on a global scale.

Supporters’ dissatisfaction with the Glazers’ lack of ambition to bring in top players intensified after the club finished sixth in the English Premier League last season, while crosstown rivals Manchester City won their second title in a row.

As of Tuesday’s close, the soccer club had a market capitalization of $2.08 billion.

Manchester United fans have protested in recent years against the Glazers, who bought the club for £790m in 2005, due to the team’s problems on the pitch.

The anti-Glazer movement gained momentum last year after United became involved in a failed attempt to create a breakaway European Super League.

Some fans urged Mr Musk to buy Manchester United instead of buying Twitter.

Mr. Musk has a history of unconventional actions and comments, so it’s sometimes hard to tell when he’s joking.

His ambitions range from colonizing Mars to creating a new sustainable energy economy, and in the process he’s built the world’s most valuable automaker, electric vehicle maker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX, and a host of smaller companies. One of them is a tunnel manufacturer called the Boring Company.

Mr Musk appears to smoke marijuana on the podcast and has battled with US regulators over his comments about his plans for Tesla, including an abandoned effort to take it private.

Forbes estimates his fortune at $270 billion.
