Google to turn off Hangouts, tell users to switch to Chat

Technology giant Google has announced that it is now in the process of moving free Hangouts personal users to Chat, which was announced in October 2020.

The company has indicated that users who wish to keep a copy of their Hangouts data may use Google Takeout – to download their data before the Hangouts become available in November 2022.

“We have continued to invest in Chat to help people work better and express their feelings, and we are now taking steps to help the remaining Hangouts users to move to Chat,” Ravi Kanneganti, Product Manager, Google Chat, said in a blog post .

Google has said that moving to Google Chat will allow users to edit Docs, Slides or Spreadsheets by editing separately, making it easier to share while you continue the conversation. It also includes Spaces, a dedicated site for topic-based sharing.

Groups and groups can share ideas, work on documents, and manage files and activities, all in one place. Also, the new integrated view in Gmail makes it easy to use Chat next to your Gmail, Spaces, and Meet inbox.

“Switching to Chat also makes self-expression more enjoyable, whether you use skin-colored emoji, edit rich text to enhance your conversations, @mentions to inform someone in the group or post a GIF,” the company said.

Google said that, for the first time, people using Hangouts on mobile will see an in-app screen asking them to move to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app. Similarly, people using the Hangouts Chrome extension will be asked to migrate to Chat on the web or install the Chat web app.

In July, people using Hangouts in Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail.
