Here’s why WordPress can quickly stop working on this previous browser

WordPress has become one of the most widely used platforms for blogging or hosting small websites thanks to its free hosting program. The platform is accessible to a variety of browsers, but the company reportedly wants to discard the expired browser support for Internet Explorer 11 in the future.

In a recent blog post, WordPress revealed that it plans to remove support for the old Microsoft browser, as its market share dropped to a much lower price. The company said it relied on statistics from many websites that track users’ browsers, said Sleeping Computer, which first saw the ad.

The company said that according to StatCounter’s GlobalStats, Internet Explorer 11’s market share was 0.71% of global browsers, while W3 Counter averaged 1.2 percent. Meanwhile, WordPress said its statistics showed that only 0.46 percent of users were in an expired browser.

If a company continues to decide to abandon Internet Explorer 11 support, users in that browser will now be able to access any WordPress site and will simply be shown an error page that asks them to switch to a modern browser. The company says the browser usage numbers are “very close to the data used to make a decision in 2017 to discontinue support for versions of IE 8, 9, and 10.”

WordPress would not be the first company to discontinue old browser support, as the company notes that even Microsoft has discontinued its Microsoft 365 Team Teams and Services program. Google Chrome, both based on the open Chromium browser engine.

“Many” users already know, the company said in a blog post, as it added a flag saying it “does not recommend” Internet Explorer more than a year ago. It also said that “the whole experience is not good for IE11” and that it came at a high cost for developer repairs, which is why support will be reduced.
