HoloLens 2 gets full integration with Microsoft Teams

The HoloLens 2 augmented reality headset has long supported video calls through Microsoft Teams, but full integration of the service has appeared on the device only now. From now on, users can make calls, view and add people to contacts, as well as study calendars and participate in group meetings.

What’s more, Teams on HoloLens 2 supports displaying content shared by people you’re talking to. It is displayed as a separate hologram that can be moved and resized.

Also added support for text chat during video calls, viewing images and PDF files, which are also displayed as holograms.

Microsoft Teams on HoloLens 2 is most commonly used for remote assistance. For example, an engineer or technical support person can join a conference or call the right person to help solve a problem.

These are the first major changes to the HoloLens software since Alex Kipman left Microsoft. It was also reported that Microsoft canceled the HoloLens 3 headset, but this was not officially announced. What’s more, the new head of the mixed reality division has hinted that a new generation of the headset could come out in the foreseeable future.

“We’re just looking in the right direction to make this a meaningful update,” said Scott Evans, Microsoft vice president of mixed reality. “[Предприятиям] we need a successor device that delivers even higher returns on investment.” He argues that unlike consumers who like to frequently change their devices, businesses don’t want to make their existing headsets obsolete just for the sake of minor improvements. “Right now they don’t need a successor, but they want to know that one will show up at the right time.”

In the next major HoloLens update, the company intends to improve the displays, tracking system, sensors, and battery life of the headset.
