India is building a database for companies to train artificial intelligence models: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

India is building a large database of anonymized non-personal data for Indian companies and startups that use artificial intelligence (AI), Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Information Technology said at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF). , an industry event held in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Chandrasekhar said it will be “one of the largest dataset programs where anonymized non-personal data will be available for the entire AI ecosystem”.

Although the database is primarily intended for use by Indian companies, Chandrasekhar noted that an exception can be made for foreign companies that want to “come and create opportunities” in India. He also said that the government is considering partnerships between Indian companies. and foreign companies, especially in the field of deep technologies. To support such partnerships, the government will also provide capital access including government procurement, he added.

Deep Tech is a classification used for startups or companies that work on cutting-edge technologies of the future.

Large databases play a key role in training machine learning (ML) models. Globally, there are various open-source datasets such as MySQL and Apache Cassandra that are available to AI researchers and used by small and large companies around the world.

Chandrasekhar further said that the government will soon introduce the Digital India Act to replace the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000.

Last month, the government withdrew a draft privacy law that had faced opposition from privacy advocates and tech companies for giving government agencies broad access to data and diluting it by subsuming non-personal data.

“We have withdrawn the Privacy Bill 2021 because it has become too complex,” Chandrasekhar added. He reiterated that the government will soon introduce a Digital Privacy Bill that will be “a contemporary modern global standard framework of laws.”
