India recorded the highest net shutdowns globally in 1H 2022

According to a new report, India accounted for up to 85% of internet shutdowns in the first six months of 2022 out of 10 countries where internet outages and restrictions were recorded.

A report released by Internet watchdog NetBlocks and VPN service Surfshark said Asia is the most censored continent.

In India, Jammu and Kashmir saw maximum shutdowns, although it was rampant in other parts of the country as well. On June 17, a significant disruption of fixed and mobile internet connectivity was reported in Bihar, according to Netblocks. The incidents occurred due to government-imposed telecom restrictions in the state to counter protests against the Agnipath recruitment scheme, NetBlocks added.

The report also showed that of the 10 countries where shutdowns were recorded, the number of cases in the first half of this year fell by 14% – from 84 in H1 2021 to 72 in H1 2022.
