Instructions: Enable drag and drop icons in the updated system tray in Windows 11 Build 25211+

A couple of weeks ago, Microsoft began testing the updated system tray on the taskbar, although at that time it did not support reordering the icon using drag and drop. The developers have promised that this feature will appear in one of the future insider builds for the Dev channel. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long, and in build 25211 we can evaluate the experimental implementation of this feature.

Unfortunately, both the updated system tray and the ability to drag and drop tray icons are undergoing A/B testing, so they are not yet available to all users. If you still want to test the changes, then use the ViVeTool utility to force the inclusion of innovations.

Instruction

  1. Download the ViVeTool utility by this link. This is a new version of ViveTool 0.3.1, the details of which we described in our material.
  2. Unzip the downloaded archive to any place on your computer (for example, you can create a ViVeTool folder in the root of the C: drive and place the files there).
  3. Open a command prompt as an administrator (for example, by typing CMD in the search and selecting the appropriate item).
  4. In the command line, navigate to the folder with ViVeTool using the command cd /d , then press Enter. For example: cd /d "C:\ViVeTool"
  5. Type the following commands and press Enter:
    • Updated system tray: vivetool /enable /id:26008830 /store:both
    • Ability to drag and drop tray icons: vivetool /enable /id:38764045 /store:both
  6. Make sure that the command line shows the message “Successfully set feature configuration”
  7. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

If you want to disable the features, then use the following commands:

  • vivetool /disable /id:26008830 /store:both
  • vivetool /disable /id:38764045 /store:both
