Tech giant Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone 14 series. The four iPhones in the series are iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple launched e-SIM-only models in the US for the first time. So the question arises, will the US-based variant of the iPhone work in India? The answer is yes, US-based iPhone variants will work in India.
Apple has ditched the physical SIM card slot in the iPhone 14 lineup in the US. This means that the US variants of the iPhone 14 series will not come with a physical SIM tray. Instead, the iPhone 14 series phone will only support eSIMS. These US-based iPhones cannot be activated with a physical SIM card, the company says.
Major telecom service providers like Airtel, Jio and Vi support e-SIM. The e-SIM device has been available in India for many years. Apple has already registered these telcos for e-SIM devices. This means Indian users can get their iPhone 14 from the US and it will work in India. But only an unlocked iPhone will work here.
However, there are advantages and disadvantages to getting the latest iPhone from the US. The brand new iPhone 14 does not support physical SIMS. This means that users will have to seek help from their service providers to get their new iPhone up and running. Vi, Jio and Airtel have clearly mentioned how to activate e-SIM on their websites.
In particular, users cannot transfer anything stored on their physical SIM card. In addition, users will not be able to store contacts or anything else on the SIM. It is also important to note that only a few telcos provide fast e-SIM transfer to switch operators. Users need to check if the one they want to move is supported or not. No physical SIMS is a problem for users if they want to switch between devices.
Importantly, users on the go will need to use a provider that supports e-SIM. They cannot buy any local SIM card from the airport and use it. This results in much higher roaming costs.
