Microsoft announces a “new Bing” based on an improved version of ChatGPT

Microsoft has announced a new version of the Bing search engine, which, as expected, will integrate an improved version of the ChatGPT chatbot from OpenAI. The Edge web browser will also be updated to give you a new way to browse the web and search for information on the Internet.

“In 40 percent of cases, people click on search links and immediately go back – this is a sign that the search is not working. We are forced to adapt to the conditions of search engines, and not vice versa. Search hasn’t changed since the last technology leap. The user experience remains the same as it was 20 years ago,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft.

That’s why Bing will have a chatbot, probably based on the GPT-4 language model (ChatGPT uses GPT-3.5). The company believes that artificial intelligence in the search engine will help users get the information they need faster. Unlike ChatGPT, the Bing chatbot will have access to up-to-date information about the world.

In the new Bing, users will be able to type in queries up to 1,000 characters long and receive annotated AI-generated responses that appear next to regular search results.

Key achievements:

1. Bing is powered by OpenAI’s next-generation Logic Learning Machine (LLM), specifically designed for search engines. It is more powerful than ChatGPT.
2. A new way to work with OpenAI called the “Prometheus model” that improves relevancy, annotates answers, makes them more relevant, and more.
3. Improved search indexing baselines by applying an AI model to the main search algorithm. This is the biggest jump in results relevance ever.
4. New user interface.

Microsoft Edge browser will have a new sidebar to quickly navigate to the Bing chatbot. This is convenient, as you can make a request regarding the open page or documents.

For example, a chatbot will be able to provide summary information about an open 15-page PDF file. And if you find a piece of code on Stack Overflow, then you can ask the chatbot to rewrite it into another programming language, for example, Rust.

Bing preview is available today for a limited number of users. To do this, you need to visit the site bing.com/new (currently not available). Everyone will be able to complete a certain number of requests, as well as leave a request for full access. The mobile version of the new Bing will appear in the coming weeks.

In addition, a new build of Microsoft Edge for the Dev channel will be released in the coming hours, which will include integration with Bing.
