As expected, as part of its annual fall presentation, Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 9 and announced the unification of the Surface Pro X with the main Surface Pro line. Thus, Surface Pro 9 became the first device that can ship with processors from both Intel and Qualcomm (ARM).
Note that the appearance of the novelty has not changed compared to last year’s Surface Pro 8, but the company introduced two new colors at once – Sapphire (blue) and Forest (green) in addition to the classic Platinum and Graphite options.
Surface Pro 9 features the latest 12th Gen U-series Intel processors that deliver up to 50% faster performance than the 11th Gen chips used in Surface Pro 8. The display now supports up to 120Hz.
Models with Intel processors can offer up to 15.5 hours of battery life, which is 0.5 hours less than the Surface Pro 8. The dimensions of the device have not changed, but the Surface Pro 9 has become a little lighter – 879 grams (Surface Pro 8 weighed 891 grams ).
But these are not all changes. Microsoft also moved both USB-C Thunderbolt ports to the left side, the power button and volume rocker moved to the top edge, and the Surface Connect port remained in the same place. The Surface Pro X had a similar layout.
The ARM version is equipped with a Microsoft SQ3 processor, which is actually a slightly modified Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3. It is also the first device in the Surface line to support 5G wireless networks. Microsoft says the ARM-based Surface Pro 9 will be able to deliver up to 19 hours of battery life in normal use.
But it was not without its downsides. Microsoft uses the same chassis for all Surface Pro 9 models, which means that the version with the Microsoft SQ3 processor will be thicker and have air vents at the top compared to the Surface Pro X. Also, the ARM-based Surface Pro 9 will only be available in Platinum.
The novelty will go on sale on October 25 at a price of $999 for the version based on Intel and $1299 for the ARM version.
