Microsoft is preparing a major design update for File Explorer for Windows 11

It looks like Microsoft is working on a major design update for File Explorer for Windows 11 to bring the entire interface of the app in line with the modernized header. Now File Explorer is a mixture of old and new interfaces, and it is the main part of the application that has remained outdated.

Recent Windows 11 Insider builds for the Dev Channel have found references to a modern Home page and a new sidebar. These elements are expected to be done according to Fluent Design using XAML and WinUI. Based on available user data firecubestudios created the concept of the user interface “Explorer”.

Windows 11 preview builds have also seen references to new File Explorer features, including new “Activities”, “Conversations”, “Shared Status”, and “Insights” panels, which are likely to be integrated with Microsoft 365.

According to Windows Central editor Zack Bowden, the new File Explorer design will be more touch-friendly. In particular, button hitboxes will become slightly larger, and the sidebar and header interface will be simplified.

The changes to File Explorer are expected to be available to members of the Windows Insider program before the end of 2023.
