At the GDC 2022 conference, Microsoft officially announced the Xbox Game Studios Publishing Cloud division, which is working on creating cloud games for the Xbox ecosystem. Unlike streaming, cloud gaming will in theory be almost completely processed on the server side, and only then the data will be sent to the player’s device.
Kim Swift, who previously led the development of Portal, was a game designer for Valve’s Left 4 Dead, and served as director of game design for the now defunct Games and Entertainment division at Google Stadia, became the head of the unit. He joined Xbox Game Studios Publishing in June 2021.
Swift notes that cloud gaming as a technology is still at a relatively early stage of development. In the future, we can expect such games to have improved graphics, more NPCs with more complex behaviors, and multiplayer modes with a much larger number of players than there are now.
