Microsoft stopped publishing sales figures for Xbox One game consoles back in 2016, and since then, the company has only talked about the success of Xbox Live in its financial reports. Because of this, it was impossible to assess how well the Xbox One was selling compared to its main competitor in the face of the PlayStation 4. In turn, analysts argued that in terms of sales of consoles, Microsoft is inferior not only to Sony, but also to Nintendo.
But all the secret one day becomes clear. Regulators around the world are now considering a potential deal between Microsoft and Activision, so the companies have to disclose some information. For example, Microsoft, in documents to the Administrative Council for Economic Defense of Brazil (CADE), admitted that Sony has sold more than twice as many PlayStation 4 consoles as compared to Xbox One.
Since March of this year, Sony has also not reported sales data for the PlayStation 4, so we will focus on the latest figure – 117.2 million units. This means that Microsoft has sold less than 58.5 million Xbox One consoles. This figure is in good agreement with the results of the study. Ampere Analysis of 2020, according to which by the end of the second quarter of 2020, Microsoft had sold only 51 million consoles. By comparison, the Nintendo Switch has sold 111.08 million units to date.
In the new generation, the gap between Sony and Microsoft has narrowed somewhat. According to Ampere Analysis, by the end of 2021, about 17 million PlayStation 5s had been sold, which is 1.6 times more than the Xbox Series X|S. At the same time, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the Xbox has been the number one next-generation console in North America for three consecutive quarters. Microsoft still prefers not to disclose exact numbers.
