Microsoft appears to be working on adding a tabbed interface to the Notepad app for Windows 11, as evidenced by a screenshot of a preview of the app posted by a company employee. Note that by now the original tweet has been deleted, but the image has of course survived online.
As with File Explorer, Notepad tabs will appear at the top of the application, allowing users to open multiple text (.txt) files in the same window. You can also see a warning in the screenshot that says “Do not discuss features or take screenshots.”
It is likely that a new version of Notepad with tabs will be announced in the next few weeks, after which it will be available to members of the Windows Insider program. The full release will take place in a few months, possibly at the same time as one of the future Moment updates for Windows 11.
