Sony introduced an updated PlayStation Plus subscription

Sony announcedthat an updated PlayStation Plus subscription will be launched this June, combining the current PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now subscriptions. The new version of the subscription, of course, intends to impose competition on Microsoft’s successful Xbox Game Pass service.

So, from June 2022, there will be three levels of PlayStation Plus subscription:

  1. PlayStation Plus
    • Provides the same features as the current PlayStation Plus: two monthly downloads, exclusive discounts, cloud saves and multiplayer.
    • The subscription price will remain the same as the current PlayStation Plus – $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
  2. PlayStation Plus Extra
    • All the features of the Essential level.
    • Nearly 400 games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 from both PlayStation Studios and partners.
    • The subscription price is $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year.
  3. PlayStation Plus Premium
    • All the features of the Essential and Extra levels.
    • Nearly 340 additional games from PS3, PS2, PS and PSP. It is noted that downloading games from the PlayStation 3 will not work, so you will have to use streaming from the cloud.
    • Stream games for PS, PS2, PSP and PS4 available with Extra and Premium subscriptions. The feature will only be available in countries where PlayStation Now is available. It will be possible to stream games on both PS4 and PS5, as well as on PC.
    • Limited game trials so you can try them out before you buy.
    • The subscription price is $17.99 per month or $119.99 per year.

In countries where PlayStation Now is not available, a PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription will be offered, which will be slightly cheaper than the Premium tier. It will offer the same experience as Premium except for game streaming from the cloud.

Sony says the following games will be in the new subscription catalog at launch:

  • Death Stranding
  • God of War
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Mortal Kombat 11
  • returnal

The phased rollout of the upgraded PlayStation Plus subscription will begin in June 2022 in select Asian markets. In Europe, North America and other regions, the new subscription will be available at a later date. The new subscription is expected to be available worldwide by the end of the first half of the year.
