Innovations

Evolution of the ” Emoji Panel»

Over the past 3 years, Microsoft has added several ways to Express yourself when typing in Windows. In addition to the menu for selecting emoticons and expanding the list of emoticons, support for various characters and kaomoji has also been added. We also added ways to manage clipboard history.

Now, Microsoft has decided to combine many of these separate features, as well as provide users with some new features, including easy access to animated gifs.

Capture

Microsoft understands that sometimes it takes more than just emoticons to correctly convey your emotions when communicating via text. This is why the company is updating the emoticon selection panel to make it a universal tool for self-expression when you type on your device.

  • Updated design. The element’s interface now follows the principles of Fluent Design, including an acrylic background.
  • Search for emoticons. Added a search field to make it even easier to find the desired smiley face. Only works in supported languages.
  • Support for animated GIF files and search for them. If you use the WIN + or WIN + keyboard shortcut, you can quickly insert animated gifs. The collection of gifs will be constantly updated with trends and hashtags. Search is additionally accessible if you require to discover the perfect GIF with any feedback to communicate your message succinctly.
  • Combining the emoticon selection panel and clipboard history. Now the clipboard history and the emoticon selection tool are in the same window. You can, however, click WIN + V to go to the clipboard history, to change the Clipboard category you can use the WIN + or WIN + key sequence.

Microsoft will continue to work on improving input in Windows, and you can send your suggestions to the ” feedback Center “in the new category” text Input and language ” – > “Emoji, Kaomoji, GIF and other input”.

Please note. To insert an animated GIF file as you type, the text field must support it. Search for animated gifs requires an Internet connection and is based on the Tenor platform. For more information about the supported GIF search languages.

This feature is currently available to a limited number of insiders on the Dev channel. This will allow Microsoft to quickly identify issues that may affect performance and stability. Gradually, the feature will be available to all users on the Dev channel.

Voice typing

Now Windows has updated the voice typing with an improved version of voice dictation which enables you to touch-type text by voice anywhere which has a text field on your computer. Sometimes using voice is easier and more effective than typing on the keyboard. Just relax and let AI do its work.

Improved features:

  • Stylish design optimized for performance with touch keyboards.
  • Now no need to bother about punctuation as this update comes with automated punctuation.
  • Updated filling for more reliable voice text input.

This feature starts by holding win+H or by clicking the voice command button next to the start button.

Improving the design of the touch keyboard

Some insiders will see the new touch keyboard design on their devices. The updated design includes a new aesthetic and many other small elements, including updated key sizes and layouts to optimize the convenience and accuracy of typing. Some work has also been done to improve the detectability and usability of the available features.

As you study the updated design, you will notice several improvements, including:

  • Additional keys have been optimized for faster typing. Try pressing and holding keys like “e” or ” – ” to see what it looks like.
  • If you prefer not to pin the keyboard at the bottom of the screen, you can detach it using the button available directly in the suggestions panel. And you can easily move the keyboard around the screen using the capture area at the top.
  • All items in the settings are now marked to make it easier to understand the purpose of the available options.
  • The touch keyboard now can search for emoticons, which means you no longer have to manually search for the desired smiley in different categories. What’s more, you can now also search for animated gifs. All these features are available by clicking on the corresponding button in the suggestions panel. For more information, see the section about updating the “Emoji Panel” above.
  • A new voice input activation point has been added to the left of the space in supported languages (see the section about voice input above).

The touch keyboard can be accessed on any PC using the button on the taskbar, although you may need to enable it manually. To do this, right-click on the taskbar or tap and hold the taskbar, and then select “Show touch keyboard button” from the context menu. After opening the keyboard, try typing or drawing a shape on it, then send your feedback to Microsoft.

The company thanks insiders for sharing their feedback on the touch keyboard over the years. And these reviews inspired engineers to create these changes.

Pay attention. Some keyboard layouts for certain languages are currently being updated to a new design. Currently, the ability to type without taking your finger off the screen (shape writing) is only supported when using a wide layout or a layout for one-handed use.

Move the cursor using the space bar

Insiders have repeatedly suggested adding the ability to change the cursor position using the touch keyboard. Microsoft is working on these reviews and updating the keyboard, for the betterment of us by using any text field using gestures on the space bar.

All you have to do is put your finger on the space bar and swipe it left, right, up or down. As you move your finger, the cursor will move one character or line at a time.

Microsoft will be happy to hear your ideas for further improving text input in Windows. So don’t forget to send feedback!
