Good morning, friends! Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 pre-build number 20246 for Windows Insider program members using the Dev channel (formerly “Early access”).

Commencing with today’s build, Insiders will see that the title of the section that builds are published from has changed to FE_RELEASE. As in May, when insiders started getting builds from the MN_RELEASE branch, the company is practising the ability to change a branch that is considered an active development branch. Since engineers work in different branches within the development cycle, insiders may need to move between these branches. As a result of switching to the FE_RELEASE branch, insiders will notice that some features, such as the updated emoticon panel, redesigned touch keyboard and voice input, as well as theme-based splash screens, have been temporarily removed from the system. The company hopes to return these features to insiders in the future. And an important reminder: FE_RELEASE builds do not apply to any specific version of Windows 10.

We advise you that the Dev channel releases build may comprise considerably unpleasant delusions. If you demand more resistance, we advise switching to the Release Preview channels or Beta (Late access).

Other insider updates

The preview version of the Calendar app will be eliminated in the upcoming update, and it will go back to its classic look. Members of the Windows Insider program will see a pop-up window notifying them of these changes. Microsoft appreciates your great ideas and is happy to continue working on the Calendar.

Changes and improvements

Added a command wsl.exe –install to automatically install the Linux distribution. This means that users who want to quickly install Windows Subsystem for Linux can simply type “wsl.exe -install” to the command line, getting a fully configured instance of WSL, including the selected Linux distribution.

Corrections

• Fixed an issue where the Select time button in the Windows update dialogue box didn’t work.
• Fixed an issue where hovering the cursor over the app thumbnail in the “task View” displayed an unexpected border around the item.
• Fixed an issue where chkdsk could hang at 100% because the process completion message was not displayed.
• Fixed an issue that previous builds could cause a crash when disabling certain audio devices during audio playback.
• Fixed an issue where the Windows update page in Settings might not load when connected to a Wi-Fi network without Internet access.
• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the Settings app to crash when selecting the Update and security category.
• Fixed an issue where the “Memory” section in “Parameters” unexpectedly displayed incorrect information about the occupied memory by categories (more than is displayed in “Explorer”).
• Fixed an issue that could cause a crash when resizing partitions in the “Memory” section in “Settings”.
• Fixed an issue where GPU Compute scripts, including those related to the use of CUDA and DirectML, did not work inside the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

Known Error

• We are investigating reports that after installing games from the Microsoft Store on a secondary disk that does not have the OS installed, this disk becomes unavailable. To prevent this from happening, you must change the default save location for new games BEFORE installing the game. You can arrange this in “Settings” then “Memory” and last click on “Change the location where new content is saved”.
• We investigate records that the system update rule may hover for a long time when attempting to install a new build.
• The real-time preview for pinned site tabs is not yet accessible to all insiders, so you can see a grey window when you hover over the thumbnail on the taskbar. Engineers are operating to improve this feature.
• Engineers are working on enabling a new taskbar feature for already pinned websites. However, you can unpin a site from the taskbar, remove it from the edge://apps page, and then re-pin it.
• We are investigating reports that a GSOD occurs on some devices with the DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION error.
• We are investigating reports that the taskbar overlaps the power button in the start menu. If you encounter this problem, use the WIN + X combination to shut down the system.
• Insiders on ARM devices like the Surface Pro X will notice that Windows PowerShell doesn’t run on this build. As a workaround, use ” Windows PowerShell (x86)” or “Windows PowerShell ISE (x86)” from the Start menu if you need PowerShell. Alternatively, use the new and modern PowerShell 7 shell that runs natively on ARM devices. And it has a more beautiful icon.
