Innovations

Improved DNS configuration in “Parameters”

Several changes have been made to the “Network and Internet” section in the “Settings” app:

  • Simplify access to DNS settings. Now changing the assigned DNS server is a top-level option when you go to the network properties page.
  • Manage encrypted DNS in the Settings app. Encrypted DNS (DNS over HTTPS or DoH) class=” rank-math-link”=”” title=”can help improve privacy and security when browsing the web” rel=”nofollow”>can help improve privacy and security when browsing the web. Now you can configure DoH directly in the Settings app, which makes it easier to use This feature:
  • For Ethernet connections: Click on “Settings” – > then go to “Network and Internet” – > “Status”, click” Properties”, then select” Edit “for” DNS server Assignment “or” IP Assignment . In the pop-up window, you can activate DoH.
  • For Wi-Fi links: Click on “Settings” – > “Network and Internet” – > “Status”, click” Properties”, then choose” Edit “for” DNS server Assignment “or” IP Assignment . In the pop-up window, you can activate DoH. Currently, you will not see the encryption parameters if you go to the properties page of a network.

You can add any IP address to unlock the DoH drop-down list and enable encryption. After enabling encryption, you can verify that the function works by looking at the DNS server parameter in the network properties, where the “(Encrypted)”mark appears. If you want to try your own DoH server that is not yet recognized by the system, you can configure the IP address to be recognized as a DoH server using the netsh command.

Access the Android app from your PC via the “Your phone” app»

Microsoft continues to develop the “Your phone” app. Thanks to the integration with the “Connect with Windows” feature on some Samsung devices, you can now access mobile apps on your smartphone directly from your Windows 10 PC. There is no need to additionally install and configure applications, log in to them, and so on, which greatly saves you time and nerves.

Moreover, you can conveniently pin mobile apps to the taskbar and start menu for quick access to them. When you launch the app, it opens in a separate window outside of the “Your phone” app, which allows you to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. If you need to respond quickly in a conversation or order bard, you can do this using the PC’s large screen, keyboard, mouse, pen, or touch screen, just like in other PC apps.

But the work does not stop there. In the future, Samsung Galaxy Note20 users will be able to launch multiple mobile apps simultaneously, and then support for this feature will appear on some other smartphones. Applications will be launched in separate windows, which will allow you to interact with several applications at once.

Starting today, Android smartphones that support the “phone Screen” feature will start getting access to preliminary testing of the innovation. The ability to launch multiple apps simultaneously is not yet available, but it will be available before the end of this year.

Key features:

  • View the list of installed Android apps directly in the “Your phone” app.
  • Add some of the apps you use to your favourites or search for installed apps.
  • Launch any mobile app on your PC.
  • Apps and the phone Screen feature run in separate windows on your PC.
  • You can pin android apps on windows phone.
  • The notification icon in the list of all apps will notify you of unread notifications.

Requirements for the function:

  • PC needs to run on Windows 10 October 2018 Update or newer. We recommend that you always use the latest version of Windows 10, the “Your phone” app, and the “Connect with Windows” feature.
  • Available on some Android smartphones running Android 9.0 or higher with Windows Connection integration.
  • Your PC and smartphone must be integrated into the identical Wi-Fi network.

Known issues and limitations:

  • Some apps may block the broadcast to other screens, so you will see a black screen instead of the app.
  • Some games and apps may not respond to interaction with your PC’s mouse or keyboard. You will need a touch-screen device to work with them.
  • The sound from the apps will be played on your smartphone.
  • The ability to launch multiple apps will appear during this year.

Changes and improvements

The 3D Viewer app has been moved to the Windows Accessories folder in the list of all apps in the start menu.

Corrections

  • Fixed an issue where the “Close all Windows” action on the taskbar did not close all open tabs.
  • Fixed an issue where the “Network” icon on the taskbar could indicate that there was no Internet connection, even though there was Internet access.
  • Fixed an issue where dragging an app from the list of all apps to the tile grid in the start menu did not result in pinning some apps.
  • Fixed an issue where header letters in the list of all apps in the start menu had unnecessary margins on the left if the list of apps is hidden.
  • To solve the problem that caused some tiles to be barely visible in a full-screen mode of the start menu with a specific background, the company slightly reduced the transparency of the start menu in this mode.
  • A problem which occurred while using the start menu layout through MDM, tile groups was getting vanished after a few days of an operating system without restarting.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the app icon in the notification to go slightly out of bounds if the notification contained an embedded image.
  • Fixed an issue where launching an app from the taskbar drop-down list didn’t work for some Desktop Bridge apps and caused the app to disappear from the taskbar.
  • Fixed an issue that caused excessive use of network traffic when using the Open file dialogue box to navigate to shared network folders where the storage feature for previous versions of files is enabled.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause an empty icon to appear instead of the “+” button on the default Apps page in Settings after deleting the default app.
  • Fixed an issue where opening storage settings and then immediately switching to one of the subpages caused the page to not load when trying to go back.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the new Microsoft Edge to not display on the application Log tab in task Manager.
  • Fixed an issue that affected the launch stability of the touch keyboard.
  • Fixed an issue that caused TextInputHost.exe stopped responding to queries, which is why the clipboard history, the Emoji panel, and dictation were not displayed when the corresponding keyboard shortcuts were pressed.
  • Fixed an issue that could make it impossible to insert the first record from the clipboard history.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause GSOD to occur when exiting sleep mode on ARM64 devices.

Known error:

  • Engineers are working to fix an issue that may cause some games from the Microsoft Store that are protected by Easy Anti-Cheat to fail to launch.
  • We are investigating reports that the system update process may stall for a long time when trying to install a new build.
  • Engineers are working to fix an issue that causes the Collapse, Expand, and Close buttons to remain in the source app after resizing the UWP app window. If you move the window, the buttons should move to the desired location.
  • We are investigating the reports that the latest taskbar innovation doesn’t operate with some pinned websites.
  • Engineers are working to fix the problem so that a real-time preview for pinned site tabs will work.
  • Engineers are working on enabling a new taskbar feature for already pinned websites. However, you can unpin a site from the taskbar, remove it from the edge://apps page, and then re-pin it.
  • Engineers are working to fix an issue where not all open tabs with this domain are displayed for pinned sites. You can fix this problem by pinning the site’s home page instead of a specific section (for example, pin microsoft.com rather than microsoft.com/windows).
  • Engineers are working to fix an issue where the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut on a browser tab sometimes moves a previously active tab to the top of the Alt + Tab list.
  • Opening the WSL1 distribution might give an error”the I / o Operation was aborted due to a thread exit or due to an application request”. Details about the problem are available on Github.

We wish you a successful update!
