Microsoft has begun distributing an updated version of the Notepad app for Windows 11 to members of the Windows Insider program using the Dev channel. The new version is numbered 11.2212.33.0.
This update adds support for the tabbed interface that users have been asking for for a long time. This means you can now create, manage and organize multiple files in a single Notepad window. If you wish, you can continue working in different Notepad windows by dragging the desired tab to a separate window. In the application settings, you can specify whether files will open in new tabs or in new windows by default.
In addition, Microsoft has added new keyboard shortcuts for managing tabs, as well as improved management of unsaved files, including the ability to automatically generate a file name and tab title based on the contents of a file. The unsaved changes indicator has also been updated.
Microsoft is aware of several issues that users may encounter when using the pre-release version of the app. In particular, there may be problems with the operation of some keyboard shortcuts. Engineers continue to work on the performance of the application to ensure that it meets quality and stability standards.
